FET: gr.10 - 12

Curriculum providers

All gr.10 - 12 learners must be registered with a curriculum provider. Please contact us if you are unsure of which to choose. Most of our learners work through Impaq, however, we can work with any curriculum provider. Since most of our learners are with Impaq, there could be extra charges for other curricula.

Class times

Classes start at 8.00 and end at 13.45. Classes are usually 50 min long with a 5-10 min break between classes, and one 30 min break during the day.

Teaching and learning:

Learning is broken down into 4 areas: lecturing, memorising, active learning, and facilitated self-study.

Lecturing is not, according to studies (read the article here, or here), the ideal way of teaching. We use a combination of short classes and videos to introduce concepts and explain the work covered in textbooks.

Memorising: In all subjects, there are terms and concepts that simply needs to be memorised. We teach learners techniques to memorise facts, but it is their responsibility to spend time on this. We often quiz learners on facts and give them worksheets to help memory and recall.

Active learning: This is the fun part! We present workshops where learners do practical application, discussions, and tasks to help them understand and engage with the content. The structure of active learning workshops depends on the subject, but the aim is the same: learning through doing and having fun.

Self-study: In times between workshops and lectures learners do ‘self-study’ lessons giving them time to do plenty of exercises and past papers, allowing time to study as well as complete tasks. Facilitated self-study lessons develop skills in comprehension, reading, and study techniques and also teaches learners to be self-reliant and self-disciplined.

Maths and Maths lit teaching: A teaching class will be given once or twice a week with learners doing exercises, past papers, and tasks on Google Classroom for the rest of the week to practice the concepts taught. A teacher/tutor will be available to answer the learner's questions. Learners must do Maths for at least an hour each day.

Afrikaans and English teaching: Our emphasis is on essay writing, vocabulary, reading, and literature. The prescribed literature will be used to improve vocabulary, have debates, and as essay topics (especially for second language learners). Learners are expected to read their prescribed literature books at home. If they do not do this, they will get behind in the entire language course. There will be a teaching class at least once a week, but learners will be expected to do language coursework on Google Classroom daily.

Other subjects: Non-Science subjects: The work for the term is covered in workshops of 2-3 hours long. The amount of workshops per term depends on the subject. Workshops may include learners from gr.10-12 at the same time depending on how work overlaps. The workshops will include teaching and project-based learning. During the rest of the week, learners are expected to complete work on Google Classroom.

Science subjects: Learners will have 1-2 hour sessions 2-3 times per week. Teaching sessions will be split up per grade or combined grades, depending on overlap in the syllabus. Learners will be expected to do exercises or projects on Google Classroom daily.

Teachers / tutors / facilitators

Our teachers are not all qualified teachers. We hire people who have a passion for teaching; are capable of doing so with love and understanding and have experience working with kids. These values are more important to us than a certificate or degree. We train our teachers and monitor classes and progress closely.

Parental involvement

We appreciate parents who are involved in their child's education. Studies have shown that learners with involved parents perform better at school. However, we completely understand parents don't always have the subject knowledge to assist with learning. By being involved, we mean: Be aware of test and assignment dates, check that learners do homework, but most importantly: keep in contact with us. Whenever there is a concern, a missed school day, or a good achievement - we need to know. We can only deal with problems if we know they exist. We want your child to be happy at Sandra's House, and we want them to perform to the best of their ability.

Homework

Learners will have homework daily. It is good for learners to have a schedule and we suggest that they have a set time for doing work at home. It is not possible for us from an admin point of view to inform parents of what homework their learners have. However, we will inform parents when work is not completed. Learners have to take responsibility for their own work.

Textbooks

Textbooks can be ordered from Impaq upon registration, however, we have a library of secondhand textbooks that are available to learners. Please enquire as to availability.
